Panthenol: Provitamin B5 and the Science of Healing

Panthenol is not a glamorous active ingredient. It is the silent worker in every serious skincare product – and for good reason.

D-Panthenol is the alcohol of pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) and is oxidized in the skin to pantothenic acid, which as coenzyme A is a central building block of cellular metabolic processes. Topically applied, panthenol acts as a humectant, emollient, anti-irritant, and wound healing promoter. Its tolerability is exceptional – even highly irritated skin tolerates it without problems.

Biochemistry: from Panthenol to Pantothenic Acid

D-Panthenol (INCI: Panthenol) penetrates the skin more easily than pantothenic acid and is enzymatically converted to it there. Pantothenic acid is a component of coenzyme A – one of the most central molecules in cell metabolism. It is involved in fat synthesis, protein modification, and energy production. In skin cells, coenzyme A supports membrane synthesis and cell repair.

Moisture Retention: Humectancy and More

Panthenol is a humectant – it binds water from the environment and tissue into the stratum corneum. This effect is hygroscopic, comparable to glycerin. At the same time, panthenol has occlusive properties that reduce the evaporation of water from the skin's surface. Studies show that 1–5% panthenol significantly improves skin moisture within 24 hours.

Wound Healing and Epidermal Regeneration

Panthenol stimulates the proliferation of fibroblasts and keratinocytes. Clinical studies have shown that it accelerates wound healing, increases the tensile strength of scarred tissue, and reduces signs of inflammation. These properties make it valuable not only in daily care but also after procedures such as chemical peels, laser treatments, or sunburns.

Classification

Panthenol does not heal with attention. It heals with consistency – in every formulation that contains it.

Anti-Irritant Effect

Panthenol demonstrably reduces skin redness and itching. It modulates pro-inflammatory signaling pathways and stabilizes the barrier. For contact dermatitis, sunburn, and irritative dermatitis, it is an evidence-based component of treatment. Its combination with bisabolol, allantoin, or ectoin potentiates the soothing effect.

Application Context

Panthenol is universally applicable: morning and evening, for all skin types, on sensitive as well as acne-prone skin. It is one of the few active ingredients for which hardly any contraindications are known. The Blue Crystal Drops Night Serum from NATURFACTOR® integrates panthenol as a regenerative anchor of the night formulation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is panthenol the same as pantothenic acid?

Panthenol is the precursor form and is converted to pantothenic acid (vitamin B5) in the skin. Topically, panthenol has better penetration properties than pantothenic acid itself.

Can panthenol be used for acne?

Yes. Panthenol is non-comedogenic and can support the healing of inflammation and post-acne pigmentation.

Does panthenol also work for hair loss?

In topical application on the scalp, studies show panthenol improves hair density and quality – especially for hair damaged by heat and chemical treatments.

Conclusion

Panthenol isn't exciting – it's reliable. And in skincare, reliability is one of the rarest and most valuable qualities.
