The right order for your skincare routine – step by step to the perfect routine

Sunscreen, micellar water, nourishing cream, serum, toner, facial oil, cleansing foam & gel, cleansing oil...

  1. Do you need so much to care for your skin?

  2. In what order do you apply the whole thing?

  3. Can you use everything in one skincare routine?

Here you will find the answers – step by step:

Do you need so many products to care for your skin?

To ensure optimal facial care, you need several cosmetic products, such as a day and night cream, various serums—from moisturizing to skin-brightening—and cleansing products, namely: oil-based cleansers for makeup, cleansing gels and foams, micellar water, toners, and various facial oils. Then there's eye care: creams and serums. During the week, you'll also use a scrub and a face mask. That's quite a lot of products.

But not everyone needs such a comprehensive skincare range. Every skin type is different: dry, mature, sensitive, oily, combination, or normal. Depending on your skin type, your skincare routine should be tailored accordingly. In theory, a water-based cleanser with a few surfactants, a moisturizing cream, and then a sunscreen are sufficient for the day.
In practice, this is not always sufficient, as people with, for example, dry or mature skin need additional products that are rich in moisturizing, regenerating and protective ingredients.

Another example: If you want to reduce pigment spots, you also need highly concentrated serums, boosters and vitamins.

Or people with sensitive skin – here the following applies: The products should be chosen carefully, not irritating but still caring.

In this case, the rule is: “Less is more.”

Conclusion:

You don't need everything—but you do need the right things. A good routine consists of cleansing, active ingredients, moisturizer, and SPF. Everything else is optional—depending on your skin type, season, and lifestyle.

In what order do you apply the whole thing?

There are also certain rules and a sensible order when it comes to application.

Step 1:

The skin care routine always begins with cleansing.
People who actively wear makeup need a cleansing oil or balm first. Oil-soluble pigments in foundation, water-resistant mascara, or eyeshadow can only be partially removed with a water-based cleanser. Skin that isn't thoroughly cleansed can't breathe and is prone to irritation.
The reason: Due to their molecular size, decorative cosmetics remain on the skin's surface. Incompletely removed residues can clog pores and cause irritation, redness, or pimples.

→ Therefore, a cleansing oil or balm is necessary.

Step 2:

While cleansing oils are very effective at removing oil-soluble makeup, they often leave an oily film on the skin. This can prevent water-based active ingredients from serums from being properly absorbed.
→ Now a water-based cleanser comes into play – cleansing gel or foam – which removes the oil residue and perfectly prepares the skin for care.

Step 3 (optional):

After cleansing, a toner can be used to neutralize surfactant residues and provide additional moisture to the skin. This step is helpful but not necessary.

Step 4:

Now come products with a high concentration of active ingredients: serums, ampoules, boosters, fluids, concentrates, essences.
These differ in consistency, effect and frequency of use.

Tip: Don't forget your eye care—this is where the first signs of skin aging appear. If you use eye care, avoid applying other products to the eye area—too many products are counterproductive.
Moisturizing care supports the skin's physiological processes and counteracts premature aging – the entire face benefits from this.

A good example: Porcelain Skin Serum – a repairing, moisturizing lifting serum with BIOACTIVE INFUSION COMPLEX™ that infuses active ingredients deep into the skin for maximum effect.

Step 5:

This is followed by a nourishing cream tailored to your skin type. A separate eye cream can be used optionally. This cream locks in moisture and leaves your skin feeling soft and supple.

Step 6:

To further pamper your skin, apply a facial oil containing cold-pressed and essential oils. It seals in moisture and gives your skin a healthy glow.
A perfect example is Blue Crystal Drops Oil – an ultra-light, breathable anti-aging oil that gives the skin suppleness and radiance.

Step 7:

Sun protection always comes last!

No matter how many products you use, sunscreen must be applied last. Applying an oil after SPF can dilute the UV filters and reduce their protective effect.

Conclusion: The correct order of the products

Demanding care:

• Cleansing oil / balm
• Step 1. Cleansing foam / gel
• Step 2. Tonic (optional)
• Step 3. Serum
• Step 4. Cream
• Step 5. Facial oil
• Step 6. Sun protection

Easy care:

• Step 1. Cleansing foam
• Step 2. Serum
• Step 3. Cream
• Step 4. Sun protection
