Skincare Guide - Micellar Water
Micellar water – gentle cleansing with microtechnology
Micellar water is a gentle cleansing product based on micellar technology . It removes makeup, sebum, and dirt particles without irritating the skin barrier. The surfactant molecules it contains are arranged in tiny spheres called micelles – with a lipophilic interior and a hydrophilic exterior. This allows it to absorb both oil-soluble and water-soluble impurities.
How micelles work
Micelles act like microscopic magnets: The oil-loving side binds makeup residue and sebum, while the water-loving side ensures removal when wiping. This eliminates the need for harsh rubbing, making the product ideal for sensitive or dry skin. Another advantage is its simple, no-rinse application – perfect for minimalist skincare routines.
Ingredients and formulation
A typical micellar water consists of purified water, mild non-ionic surfactants (e.g., poloxamer 184 or decyl glucoside), humectants such as glycerin, and pH-regulating additives. Modern formulations also contain skin-soothing components such as panthenol or chamomile extract. A study published in the International Journal of Cosmetic Science (2023) showed that non-ionic surfactants in micellar solutions cause significantly less irritation than anionic surfactants ( Rawlings AV et al., 2023 ).
Advantages over traditional cleaners
- No greasy residue or feeling of tension
- Gentle cleansing for sensitive or redness-prone skin
- Ideal for multi-step routines ("Double Cleansing" - first cleansing with micelles, second with gel or foam)
- Preserves natural skin lipids and supports the barrier function
Scientific evaluation
In a comparative study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (2022), micellar formulations with a glycerin base showed 30% less barrier disruption than soap-based cleansers ( Granger C et al., 2022 ). Furthermore, a significant reduction in transepidermal water loss (TEWL) was observed, indicating good tolerability.
Application and care routine
Micellar water is applied to a cotton pad and gently wiped over the face, eyes, and lips. It should be used without vigorous rubbing. For very sensitive skin, rinsing afterward with lukewarm water is recommended to remove any remaining surfactants. For thorough cleansing, it can be combined with a mild cleansing gel.
Combination with NATURFACTOR® care
After cleansing with micellar water, skincare products like the Porcelain Skin Serum optimally prepare the skin for regeneration and firming. Its combination of hyaluronic acid, amino acids, and the Bioactive Infusion Complex™ supports moisture balance and promotes a smooth, even complexion – perfect after gentle deep cleansing.
Sustainability and formulation development
Recent developments are focusing on biodegradable surfactants and alcohol-free formulations. The reduction of microplastics in cleaning products is also playing an increasingly important role. Manufacturers are increasingly relying on sugar surfactants or plant-based derivatives, which are environmentally friendly and gentle on the skin ( Tschiggerl C et al., 2024 ).
Conclusion
Micellar water combines effective cleansing with maximum skin compatibility. Thanks to its mild surfactant base, it is suitable for all skin types, especially sensitive or combination skin. In combination with subsequent care such as the Porcelain Skin Serum, it supports the skin's balance and ensures a fresh, clean feeling without irritation.
